Recruitment

SMART identifies curious and motivated 4th grade students who have the drive to learn, but face barriers to opportunity. SMART Scholars are resilient, able to thrive in new environments, and take on new challenges. In addition, students accepted into the program come from low-income households and will be the first generation in their family to graduate from college.

During the recruitment process, the SMART team reaches out to elementary schools and community-based organizations in San Francisco to inform educators and families of this transformational opportunity. Fourth grade students are then nominated for SMART’s program by this citywide network of referral partners. In addition to the fourth grade entry point into the program, families can also apply for the program in later years. Acceptance into the program in later years is determined by available spots in addition to fit for the program.
